Popular Hiking trails in Aberdare National Park

Popular Hiking trails in Aberdare National Park.

Aberdare National Park is a great destination for hikers, offering some of the most challenging and breathtaking mountain Safari experiences in Kenya. The park has an exceptional and high‐altitude ecological system, which transitions from a dense forest to expansive moorland, and there are a number of notable peaks and trails that have become extremely popular with Kenyan and international trekkers alike.

The trails are not just walks; they are truly immersive and full-day experiences, but not without the trappings of a rigorous physical endurance challenge. The adventures give you access to views that simply cannot be matched, along with an extraordinarily different variety of high‐altitude animals.

While there is an armed ranger that must accompany all groups for safety because of large game, the emphasis on your mind will be on the thrill of climbing these legendary Aberdare peaks. Elephant Hill, Ol Donyo Lesatima, and Rurimeria Hill are the three famous full-day hiking trails, and each one of them offers a unique and unforgettable wildlife experience of the Kenyan highlands as well as a different level of challenge.

The Mighty Elephant Hill:

Elephant Hill is arguably the busiest main day hike in Aberdare National Park to date and is probably one of the most recognized trails for people training to hike Mount Kenya or Mount Kilimanjaro. Located right by the southern entrance of the park (Njabini Gate), the hike is round trip roughly 19 km, with mucho elevation gain starting around 2,500 meters.

The hike is famous for its many sections, starting with a steep, often muddy climb through a dense bamboo forest for a busy start, where you will want to watch your footing. When you emerge from the bamboo forest, the trail opens up into golden, rolling moorland, giving way to the main ascent.

The two big key sections include the dreaded “Point Dread,” a steep climb, and “The Elephant’s Tail,” before you get to the final summit. The hike is a toughness of 7-10 hours, and although tough, the view over the surrounding Aberdare Ranges, lakes of the Rift Valley in the distance, and possible views of approaching herds of buffalo and elephants grazing on the moorland are well worth it.

Oldonyo Lesatima:

For serious trekkers at the height of the park, Ol Donyo Lesatima (Mountain of the Bull Calf) is the end goal. At 4,001 meters (13,127 ft), Old Donyo Lesatima is the highest peak of the Aberdare Range and the third-highest mountain in all of Kenya. The route is primarily accessed through the Shamata Gate in the north. It is not as steep as Elephant Hill, but it is a different challenge, mostly due to the high altitude and boggy sections on the ground.

The trail leads you through another otherworldly and alpine environment, which is composed of towering giant groundsel and unique lobelia plants. The most notable portion of the hike is the amazing, rugged ‘Dragon’s Teeth’ formation with its series of jagged volcanic rock spires resembling a dragon’s spine.

Traversing this section offers a thrilling photo opportunity and a sense of fun adventure. The full-day summit attempt to Old Donyo Lesatima will take over 8 to 10 hours, and its elevation means hikers need to be prepared for very cold temperatures, possible hail, and altitude sickness.

Rurimeria Hill:

It rounds out the three major Aberdare hikes. Rurimeria Hill is the third-highest peak in the Aberdares at approximately 3860 meters (12,664 ft). Technically lower than Lesatima and Elephant Hill, Rurimeria is often referred to by many hikers as the longest and most strenuous of all the single-day treks in the Aberdares.

This very long route features a seemingly endless series of “false summits”—a test not only physically but also mentally for tired hikers. Rurimeria is arguably the best moorland trekking scenery offered in the park. The vast expanses of golden-brown tussock grass are mesmerizing. Because it is less traveled than Elephant Hill, Rurimeria is wilder and offers a more remote experience. The weather in this part of the park is highly unpredictable, as with all high-altitude hikes.

Hikers should prepare for early treks in lots of weather under the guidance of the armed rangers on this remote outlet. If the trail becomes strenuous, thousands of steps can go into this 10+ hour trip just for you, making the final arrival at the true summit very rewarding.
