Where to go in Kenya

Where to go in Kenya : Kenya is often called the “Home of the Safari” because that is where safaris began. But this beautiful East African country has so much more to see than just National parks. Discover Kenya’s wildlife, beautiful beaches, Lamu Island, Kitum Cave on Mt. Elgon, and our favorite places to see wildlife through the eyes of people who live there.

Where to go Kenya Masai Mara

1. There are beaches and Italian ice cream in Watamu and the Gede Ruins.

On the north coast of Kenya, there is a small fishing village called Watamu. Watamu is north of Mombasa, and it has white, lush beaches and eco-tourism hotels. This laid-back town is a famous beach spot. It looks out over the Indian Ocean. It has its own marine national park and a huge coral reef, which make it a great place to swim and scuba dive.

Take a boat to the Malindi Marine Reserve Park and go on a water tour to see the many fish and sea turtles that nest near the reef. Many birds come to the mangroves because they have shallow, warm water. You should also go to Watamu if you like water sports like stand-up paddling, kite surfing, and deep-sea fishing.

We know where to go if you don’t just want to hang out at the beach: The Gede Ruins are the remains of a Swahili town from the 12th century. They are right next to Watamu. This strange medieval town used to be a busy place with people from all over the world. It was a very modern city with streets, toilets that flushed, and running water. It is an amazing sign of how far Africa has come since the past.

Where to eat: A lot of Italians live in Watamu and along the coast north of Mombasa. At Bahati Gelateria Italianna, you can get ice cream made at home, and at Amici Miei, you can get the best pizza.

2.The “Great Migration” and crossing the Mara River

People often put the Masai Mara Game Reserve at the top of their list of places to visit in Kenya. The annual “Great Migration,” when millions of wildebeest, gazelle, and zebras move from Tanzania to Kenya in search of fresh grass, is probably one of the most interesting animal events in the world. The Mara River is to the north of their path. Mara is a small river, only about 40 meters wide, and its water is brown and dirty. From Kenya’s Masai Mara Game Reserve, the river runs through the northern part of the Serengeti.

But the Mara River comes to life when the “Great Migration” takes place. Watching groups of wildebeest try to cross the river is very exciting, but many of them don’t make it across alive. Crocodiles hide in the water, and big cats and other dangerous animals wait for the wildebeest groups. The strong currents are also a real danger for the animals that are moving. But this life-and-death show is about more than just letting a bunch of alligators eat: The dead bodies of the thousands of wildebeest that die during their yearly migration are, in fact, an important part of the ecosystem of the river.

But be aware that the Mara River isn’t exactly a secret anymore, and it’s unlikely that you’ll actually see a crossing. Also, you should be ready to meet a lot of other travelers. And don’t just show up at the river and expect to see huge groups of animals crossing. In fact, you have to have a lot of luck to see a river crossing.

We think that January through March is a good time to visit the Masai Mara. Then, you can stay in cheaper places and still see a lot of animals without having to compete with a lot of other cars. You will have a much better time and be able to get away from the rest of the world if you go during the summer season.

Did you know that the “Great Migration” has been seen to take place later in the year? Since the weather isn’t as predictable as it used to be, the annual trip in the Masai Mara might still be possible after September.

3.Kenya’s capital, Nairobi: Giraffes and woods

Kenya’s capital Nairobi is East Africa’s most urban city. The city’s name comes from a Masai drinking hole called “enkare nyarobi,” which means “place of cool waters.” The city is known for its parks with lots of trees. Nairobi is a modern city, so it has tall buildings that make a beautiful skyline. It is also the only city in the world that is right next to a national park.

In Nairobi, you find some quirky sights. The African Fund for Endangered Wildlife started the Giraffe Centre in 1979 to protect the Rothschild giraffe. The Democratic Republic of the Congo and Sudan no longer have these beautiful animals. You can now only find them in Kenya and Uganda.

Now, you can stay in a luxury 10-room hotel called “Giraffe Manor” in the middle of the giraffe breeding grounds and eat breakfast with the animals: In the area around the Giraffe Centre, the giraffes are free to move around. They often put their heads through the windows of hotels to say hello to the people staying there.

Going to the Karen Blixen museum is another fun thing to do in Nairobi. The Danish author Karen and her Swedish husband, Baron Bror von Blixen Fincke, used to own a farm at the foot of the Ngong Hills. This old home was the centerpiece of their farm. The famous book “Out of Africa” was set in the house, which was later turned into a museum.

The Karura forest reserve is one of Nairobi’s green parks. It is in the north of the city. Karura is one of the world’s biggest city forests. It’s a nice place to walk if you want to get out of the city.
